General Information About Black Star Square

History

The square was commissioned by Kwame Nkrumah to honour the visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Construction ended in 1961 and it was named “Black Star Square”.[1]

Importance

Black Star Square is a site for Ghana’s Independence Day parades which falls on the 6th of March every year. It also hosts all major national public gatherings and national festivals.[2] Every visitor is free to take pictures of buildings, including the Black Star Gate, but this might not include close-up shots of the Independence Arch.

Structure

Independence Square has stands that have 30,000 seating capacity. The square boasts two monuments: the Independence Arch and the Black Star Monument, also known as the Black Star Gate.[1] A statue of a soldier faces the Independence Arch symbolizing the Ghanaians who lost their lives fighting for Ghana’s independence.[1]
